Much like its predecessors, cielab provides a system to triangulate and precisely define and specify any color reference point within the theoretical sphere containing all visible color. The l*a*b* color space is derived from the cie xyz tristimulus values. When you combine two primary colors, you get the secondary colors:

At the center of this plane is neutral or gray. A positive b* value indicates yellowness and a negative b* value indicates blueness. The center l* axis shows l = 0 (black or total absorption) at the bottom. Xyz is the foundation of the l*a*b* (cielab), l*u*v* (cieluv), and l*ch color spaces.
